Identity theft is the latest online crime and is very serious in nature. People lose their credit worthiness and lots of money due to this type of crime. A report claims that early 15 million people have been affected due to identity theft so far.

Identity theft happens because of people’s own carelessness. In many cases, it has been discovered that people have been victimized by their own acquaintances. That is why credit reporting agencies suggest that no one should know your personal information other than your own family members and employers. Others, including friends, need not know information like year of birth and mother’s maiden name.

It has also come out recently that young children have had their identity stolen and often this crime is committed by the very parents of the children. Therefore, given this fact, it has become practically impossible to trust anyone, including family members, with your personal information, especially Social Security number. If you want to help a friend or family member purchase something online, it is very nice of you. Must make sure that they do not misuse the information you provide them. Always check your credit report at least once a year to ensure that no unwanted transactions are being conducted in your name.

If an identity thief collects a lot of information about you, then he or she can open several credit card accounts on your name and start using them. The number of credit frauds has increased of late because your own loved ones or people who know you are the perpetrators. The bad economy is the direct reason in several cases. So be aware of what is going on around you. Sometimes co-workers can also gather your personal information. Never use office desktops for credit card transactions and always make it a point to lock your workstation. Your work computer can reveal a lot of data about you and you would not even realize that you have so much personal information stored on the computer. Get into the habit of clearing the history of browsers on your computer before leaving your desk. Also, guard your pins and passwords with dear life.
