First Boeing 787 delivered; here comes the hard part

Written on September 22, 2011 – 1:25 am | by Chloe Gatenby

CHICAGO (Reuters) – As Boeing Co executives and workers toast the first delivery of the revolutionary 787 Dreamliner on Sunday, the next enormous hurdle must weigh heavily on their minds: they have to make about 800 more.

The company has 821 orders for the lightweight carbon-composite aircraft on its books, a record number for a Boeing plane still in development.

The airplane, which owes its popularity to promises of unprecedented fuel savings and passenger comfort, however, is three years behind its original development schedule and by some estimates tens of billions of dollars over budget.

Boeing, which competes for airplane orders with EADS unit Airbus, gets paid for its planes when it delivers them. So the sooner the company can get orders filled, the sooner it can start earning a return on its investment.

The Dreamliner lists for about $200 million, but actual sales prices are normally lower than list prices.

“The break-even point on the aircraft is a big bone of contention,” said Alex Hamilton, managing director of EarlyBirdCapital.

Back to School and Data Breaches: Universities Continually Exposing Student Data

Written on August 26, 2011 – 8:30 am | by Brayden Lorenzini

After completing summer internships or working jobs for extra cash to get through the school year, most college students are excited to get back on campus and experience what many believe are the four best years in life.   Well, it seems that as of late, many college students have had to worry about something else this time of year: their personal data being exposed by the higher learning institutions that are grooming them into being productive adults.

Recently, there have been some very stark real-life examples of data breaches at colleges and universities that may create long-term financial problems for students.  Here they are:

  • Yale University Data Breach: Yale just notified about 43,000 faculty, staff, students and alumni that their names and Social Security numbers were publicly available via Google search for about 10 months.  The breach resulted when a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server on which the data was stored became searchable via Google.
  • The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Data Breach: The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee recently went public with its efforts to contact about 75,000 people to let them know they may have had their names and Social Security numbers accessed by cyber thieves.  Malware was found on university server housing software that managed confidential information for several departments.
  • Purdue University Data Breach: Last week, more than 7,000 former Purdue University students received letters telling them their Social Security numbers may have been accessed during a breach.

So, what’s going on here?  It seems that nobody is immune to data breaches and colleges and universities have always (and will be) a target for cybercriminals.

Do You Let Your Kids Out Unsupervised?

Written on August 25, 2011 – 7:26 pm | by Brayden Lorenzini

Back 30-35 years ago there were house break-ins like there are today, but home security systems were scarce and people weren’t all that concerned either. A lot has changed.

When I was in elementary school, my parents would let us walk to school, walk home, play outside all day and my mother or father would scream at the top of their lungs calling us to come in after dark.

My father and I joke about this all the time. He told me one time he was calling my brother who wasn’t answering him and he got a little panicked. He started his hunt and found my brother lying down in the driveway sleeping.

When I was 12 my father let my brother and I go into downtown Boston to do some shopping. When we got off the train 5 kids followed us, surrounded us, I resisted, they smacked me around and took all my money. That was my first real experience with predators. I quickly learned about situational awareness and being aware of my surroundings. Not
